Duke University was founded in 1924 as a memorial to James Buchanan Duke’s father, Washington Duke. The Dukes, a Durham family that built a worldwide financial empire in tobacco manufacturing and developed electricity production in the Carolinas, had long been interested in Trinity College. Trinity’s origins can be traced back to 1838 in nearby Randolph County, when local Methodist and Quaker communities founded Union Institute. The Stagville State Historic Site is a historic house museum comprised of buildings from the Stagville Plantation, one of the largest in the American South. The plantation was originally owned by the Bennehan-Cameron family, and the buildings date from the late 18th century to the mid-19th century.
American Tobacco Historic District
For decades, the American Tobacco Campus and the City of Durham were among the busiest industrial centers in the country, shipping goods all over the world. The demise of the tobacco industry in Durham provided an opportunity for the Bull City to reinvent itself.
The Eno River Association purchased 96 acres of undeveloped land, known as the Goss property, that will eventually become part of Eno River State Park. The Eno River Association has a long history with Eno River State Park, since the Association was part of the alliance that worked to establish the park in 1973. The Association has since been instrumental in the land protection efforts for the 4,500-acre park, especially in supporting the park’s master plan, which still has roughly 2,000 acres remaining to conserve.
